Day 301 – Wrong Number

phone2:46 a.m. “Hello?”  “Hello?”  Click  Obviously a wrong number.  I’m one of those who leaves my cell phone on full time.  Since we don’t have a home, we don’t have a home phone, so it’s always been important to leave one phone on so if the “kids” needed us, we were available.  If my phone rings in the middle of the night, that’s usually who it is, but not very often, fortunately.

I have a favorite wrong number story.  Years ago, when I did still have a home phone, I had a friend who liked to flirt.  Both of us were married, both of us enjoyed our lives, but there was some connection we had that always ended in innuendo.  So late one night when the phone rang and he started talking, I really wasn’t surprised.  I had already been in bed asleep, but came awake with the first “hey, baby.”  We talked and laughed for probably twenty minutes until he said something odd.  Something that made me say, “who is this?”  Because, you see, it wasn’t my friend, it was a total stranger.  The conversation hadn’t been direct, so I wasn’t creeped out by anything that was said, but I definitely knew it wasn’t Jim.

The caller paused, “this isn’t Kathy?”  No, not Kathy, OMG I thought, who is on the line.  While I explained to him that he had a wrong number, we both laughed, “Do you think we could meet?” he asked.

“No, I don’t think my husband would like that.” I replied

“Do you have a daughter?” he asked.

I laughed, “I do, but she’s six.”  The caller laughed too.  We finally said goodbye, it turns out he was calling from a pay phone outside a bar in Driggs, Idaho.  Best wrong number I ever had.  I hope he found the elusive Kathy that night.
